The film was released in Italy on Friday, after opening in the United States last month with an "R" rating, which allows those younger than 18 to view it only if accompanied by an adult. "Apocalypto" _ produced, directed and co-written by Gibson for Disney _ depicts a Mayan kingdom during its decline and is filled with gruesome slayings and human sacrifices. Rutelli made the comments to Italian news agency reporters during a visit to the northern city of Mantua. "I have called a meeting for Monday to take another look at the rules on authorizing movies," Culture Minister Francesco Rutelli said, adding that such rules "are now 45 years old and no longer suited to current times." Some cheesy CG in this film though.Italy may change the way movies are rated amid an uproar over a decision to allow children to watch Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto." I would say excellent sound but this isn't exactly a special effects whirlwind. The blue-ray disc shines in bringing the breathtaking scenery and backdrops to your screen as well as delivers decent sound. If on screen blood is too much for you stick to the PG-13 section.

The gore in this movie is equal or greater than "Passion of the Christ". The photography is intensely vivid especially during the scenes depicting the shear brutality of a primitive culture and it is obvious the intention was to depict a REALISTIC interpretation of the Mayan civilization and not deliver a watered-down portrayal for the sake of queasy stomached movie goers. I simply had none and could not pull away from the screen and neither could my wife who jumped in halfway through after waking up from a nap. I must say that prior to watching this film I heard primarily negative reviews in the tabloids but these people must have gone in with pre-meditated expectations. Some people will say some of the stuff was far fetched but so is every other movie, I was entertained and I think you would be to. The reason I liked this movie so much is that the hero of the story is a regular guy, he doesn't bust out in a karate fight with the bad guys, he gets hurt sometimes and he doesn't always outsmart the villians. To top everything off his wife and kid were left in danger and he knows he has to escape and save them. Unfortunately for Jaguars Paw, the main character, his village is going to have to be those people that bleed for the gods. the raiding party captures people to sacrifice to make the gods happy so the People of the Sun will stop suffering. The story is about the Mayan dying civilization and a man and his family who fall victim to a raiding party. This doesn't bother me but I know it does bother some people.
I'll point out now, that it is subtitiled. Now on to what I thought about the movie. I first saw this movie in the theator and it was good, I saw it later on DVD then saw it on Blu Ray and the Blu Ray version looked the best. This film is quite an experience for any true film fan, especially those interested in historical action movies. It is all part of the story and never seems over the top. However, none of the violence is gratuitous. The film is violent and graphic, and may be too intense for some, especially small children.
From the moment it begins until the end, it holds one's attention and never lets go. It is beautifully shot, well acted by native characters for authenticity, and its action sequences are vivid and tense. Watching this film is a visceral experience. However, no one review can really describe the story as it is felt and seen by each viewer. The story is essentially about the end of the Mayan civilization told through the very personal story of a man chosen as a sacrifice. It looked great in the theater, and at home on your big screen Blu ray, it jumps out at you until you feel that you have gone back in time with the characters. Gibson really makes his mark as a director with this superb film.
